Happy Friday everyone.   Forgot to acknowledge and thank  Art Perry, Ray Nuss and at least one other possible new retiree, whose name escapes now, for having joined us for the first time at our monthly luncheon. Also, thanks to David Jih, still working,  for visiting us for the first time too…

 

Great to see Hugh Brasseaux Sr. ,,,,for the new year too….plus all you many regulars who join us for the monthly fellowship.

  1. Special Guest Speaker Mark Rohr - Jan. 14

Join us in the Teague Auditorium to hear the experiences of special guest speaker, Mark Rorh, on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 8:30 a.m.

Mark Rohr led Joplin, Missouri as City Manager on May 22, 2011 when the deadly EF-5 tornado destroyed one third of the city; claiming an estimated 161 lives injured some 1,150 others, and caused damages amounting to a total of $2.8 billion.

Based on Rohr's experiences, he wrote a book called "The Miracle of the Human Spirit." It's based on his journal entries during and after the disaster. The book gives readers a glimpse into the priorities, details and both heart-warming and heart-wrenching stories of devastation, survival and rebuilding.

Rohr joined League City as City Manager in March 2014 with 31 years of local government experience. Rohr held city manager positions in the cities of Piqua, Ohio; Punta Gorda, Florida; Washington Court House, Ohio; and Newton Falls, Ohio.

  1. No Boundaries Employee Resource Group (NoBoERG)

Did you know that 1 in 5 individuals in the United States report having some type of disability? Or that more than 20 million families in the USA have a least one family member with a disability? The No Boundaries Employee Resource Group (NoBo ERG) is being formed to pick up the excellent work of the disAbility Advisory Group (dAG) to eliminate barriers to full inclusion and immersion of disabled employees into the JSC workforce, as well provide support and solutions to those caring for loved ones with disabilities. Please bring your lunch and join us for the inaugural meeting. We will discuss proposed awareness activities for the coming year and explore opportunities for improving the accessibility of JSC.

  1. Anika Isaac Presents "Impaired Driving"

Impaired driving covers more than driving under the influence of alcohol. Did you know that the term also represents legal/illegal drugs, sleepiness, distractions such as cell phones or texting and medical conditions? The majority of people are not aware of how impaired their driving becomes in these circumstances. Impaired driving has been expanded to include anything that causes a reduced ability to perform adequately the various elements of driving. Please join Anika Isaac, MS LPC, LMFT, LCDC, CEAP, NCC, as she presents "Impaired Driving" to learn more about the types of impaired driving and the potential impact to you and your loved ones through driving laws, healthcare costs and public safety.

  1. Project Management & Systems Engineering Forum

The next JSC Project Management & Systems Engineering Forum will be Friday, Jan. 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Building 1, Room 966. Mr. David Zuniga will be presenting the topic: "Systems Engineering in Oil and Gas: The Beginning." This topic will briefly discuss the similarities and differences that exist between existing oil and gas processes and a typical systems engineered program.

Mr. Zuniga worked as a systems engineer in Lockheed Martin's Aeronautics Division. He left the space program to work in the oil and gas industry, and has since returned. Currently, Mr. Zuniga is a systems engineer for Lockheed Martin with the ECLSS team in the Orion program.

All civil servant and contractor project managers and systems engineers are invited to attend.

  1. Fall Protection Refresher for Competent Person

This course refreshes fall protection training for competent persons as described in the OSHA Regulations, ANSI Standards Z359.2, and NASA Policy 8715.3. It is designed to update student's knowledge and skill to describe fall protection systems, components, and features, and to demonstrate the proper selection, inspection and use of fall protection equipment and systems. This course will cover all stages of the fall protection hierarchy including the four parts of a fall arrest system, fall protection equipment inspection and proper care and maintenance of fall protection equipment. There will be a final exam associated with this course. Target Audience: Safety professionals and others who may be involved in monitoring, approving or accomplishing work where fall protection is required who have taken SMA-SAFE-NSTC-0311-CP within the last three years.
