Dawn About To Arrive At One Of Solar System's "Fossils."

Coverage of the Dawn mission expanded on Monday because of NASA's news conference. The focus and tone of the articles were the same as previous days. Media sources highlighted the mission's scientific expectations and the excitement from scientists.

The AP (3/2, Chang) continues coverage of NASA's Dawn mission, which arrives at Ceres on Friday. On Monday, project manager Robert Mase of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory said, "It's been a roller coaster ride. It's been extremely thrilling." Deputy project scientist Carol Raymond said that the team members are "really, really excited about" unusual bright spots on Ceres surface because they are "unique in the solar system. ... We will be revealing its true nature as we get closer and closer to the surface. So the mystery will be solved, but it is one that's really got us on the edge of our seats." Raymond added that Ceres and Vesta, which Dawn visited in 2011, are "literally fossils" dating back to the formation of the solar system.

Dawn Among Five Important Space Events In March. The WAAY-TV Huntsville, AL (3/2, Barrett, 2K) website reports on the "very busy March" for NASA, with "multiple events" making "space history." These include Dawn's arrival at Ceres, the start of the year-long mission at the ISS, the launch of the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, the solid rocket booster qualification test for the Space Launch System, and the end of the MESSENGER mission, which has run out of fuel.

Mikulski To Retire From The Senate.

NBC Nightly News (3/2, story 11, 0:20, Guthrie, 7.86M) broadcast that Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), "the longest serving woman in the history of Congress," has decided to retire from the Senate when her term ends in 2017. ABC World News (3/2, story 11, 0:30, Muir, 5.84M) has a similar broadcast. Neither national TV news broadcasts mention her advocacy for NASA.

Meanwhile, the AP (3/2, Werner, Witte) notes that during her time in office, Mikulski "advocated forcefully" for the Goddard Space Flight Center.

Reuters (3/3, Heavey) notes that NASA researchers even named an object "Supernova Mikulski" after her.

According to Space News (3/2, Foust, Subscription Publication, 481), as the ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and its commerce, justice, and science subcommittee, Mikulski has been "an influential figure in space policy," especially for "programs involving the Goddard Space Flight Center and the Space Telescope Science Institute," the James Webb Space Telescope, and the ISS program.

The WLRN-FM Miami (3/2, Naylor) website, the NPR (3/2, Garsd, 1.58M) "The Two-Way" blog, Transterrestrial Musings (3/2, Simberg, 1K), and the Examiner (3/2, Whittington, 1.01M), are among the sources covering Mikulski's retirement which mention her ties to NASA.

New Grassroots Efforts May Not Be Successful In Their Agendas.

In an article for the Space Review (3/2), Space Review editor Jeff Foust wrote about two new "grassroots advocacy" efforts to improve NASA, which took place last week: the Alliance for Space Development (ASD) and the Pioneering Space National Summit. Foust noted that because of the timing, some thought the two groups were connected, but they were not. While participants touted the amount of consensus exhibited by supporters, Foust noted that it "remains to be seen" whether either agenda will be successful. The results from similar efforts in the past are "not necessarily encouraging."

Carlson Remembered For His Shuttle-Era Tradition.

Florida Today (3/2, Dean, 178K) reports that on Monday, friends of Norm Carlson gathered to remember the former NASA test director, who passed away Sunday from congestive heart failure. According to the article, Carlson was "best known" for starting the tradition of eating a "celebratory meal of beans and cornbread" after every shuttle launch. Former shuttle launch director Mike Leinbach said that he did not know of any other tradition "that kind of ties STS-1 to STS-135." Meanwhile, in a statement, Kennedy Space Center Director Bob Cabana said that Carlson was "the consummate professional, working tirelessly to ensure the success of the missions and the safety of all of the astronauts."

Virts Tweet Demonstrates "Enormity" Of The ISS.

The WKRN-TV Nashville, TN (3/2, 40K) website reported that ISS astronaut Terry Virts tweeted an image that demonstrates "the enormity of the International Space Station." He wrote, "Can you spot the space walker in this picture? He's very small compared to the enormous starboard truss of the #ISS."

The Daily Mail (UK) (3/2, Zolfagharifard, 4.78M) notes that Virts also tweeted a selfie with the caption, "Mission Accomplished – three #spacewalks, 800' of cable, four antennas, three laser reflectors, one greased robotic arm."

The WAAY-TV Huntsville, AL (3/2, Pavlica, 2K) "Space Alabama" website also covers the story

Florida Today Employees Win Award For Orion Coverage.

In an article for Florida Today (3/2, 178K), executive editor Bob Gabordi writes that his colleagues James Dean and Emre Kelly "won first place in the annual Best of Gannett contest" in the short-form writing/voice category for their coverage of the Orion's test launch last December. Gabordi notes that the pair not only demonstrated "outstanding overall reporting," but they also devoted "special attention to our readers' needs and questions."

Astronaut Eyesight Study Presented At American Glaucoma Society Meeting.

The Ocular Surgery News (3/2, Nale) reports that at the annual meeting of the American Glaucoma Society, Christian Otto presented the "interim results of an occupational exposure study" of why six-month stays at the ISS are affecting some astronauts' eyesight.

ISS Orbit Raised To Prepare For Spacecraft's Arrival.

Russia's ITAR-TASS News Agency (3/3, 5K) reports that the Progress M-26M spacecraft raised the ISS' orbit "by 750 meters in order to create optimal conditions for docking of the Soyuz TMA-14M spacecraft," which will launch with three new crew members on March 27.

Lawrence To Attend "The Sky's No Limit – Girls Fly Too!" Event.

The 24 Hours Vancouver (CAN) (3/2, Seccia) website reports that astronaut Wendy Lawrence will be at the Abbotsford International Airport over the weekend to take part in the "The Sky's No Limit – Girls Fly Too!" event. Kirsten Brazier, who founded the event, expects that 10,000 women and girls will be in attendance.

Student Will Take Part In NCAS This Spring.

The East Oregonian (3/2, 24K) reports that Ginger McCormick of Columbia Basin College has been chosen to take part in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program at the Johnson Space Center this spring. As part of the program, McCormick will be part of a team that will "establish fictional companies interested in Mars exploration."

  1. March 4 – All Hands with Center & NASA Leadership

You are invited to attend an all-hands event for JSC team members tomorrow, March 4, in the Teague Auditorium from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Doors will open at 10:15 a.m. The All Hands will feature JSC Director Ellen Ochoa, NASA Associate Administrator Robert Lightfoot and Deputy Associate Administrator for Mission Support Krista Paquin as they discuss NASA's progress toward a "New Operating Model and Business Services Assessment."

During the past several years you have heard a lot of information related to the Technical Capabilities Assessment Team (TCAT). In all of these discussions we have highlighted many complementary areas—the other pieces of the puzzle. One of these areas in particular, agency business capabilities, has now kicked off its assessment efforts.

The Business Services Assessment (BSA) was designed to leverage the experience gained from TCAT methodology and tailor it for the operating model of agency business services. Like TCAT, BSA is committed to transparency and stakeholder input to inform decisions throughout all phases of the process. The larger goal of all of these assessment activities is the development of a new, healthier operating model for the agency—one that balances the maintaining and advancing of our critical capabilities with performing our current and future missions.

Ochoa, Lightfoot and Paquin will also answer questions at the end of the program. If you would like to submit a question for consideration in advance or during the All Hands, please email it to: JSC-Ask-The-Director@mail.nasa.gov

Those unable to attend in person can watch the All Hands on RF Channel 2 or Omni 3 (45). JSC team members with wired computer network connections can view the All Hands using the JSC EZTV IP Network TV System on channel 402. Please note: EZTV currently requires using Internet Explorer on a Windows PC or Safari on a Mac. Mobile devices, Wi-Fi, VPN or connections from other centers are currently not supported by EZTV.

First-time users will need to install the EZTV Monitor and Player client applications:

    • For those WITH admin rights (Elevated Privileges), you'll be prompted to download and install the clients when you first visit the IPTV website
    • For those WITHOUT admin rights (Elevated Privileges), you can download the EZTV client applications from the ACES Software Refresh Portal (SRP)

If you are having problems viewing the video using these systems, contact the Information Resources Directorate Customer Support Center at x46367, or visit the FAQ site.

  1. It's the Centennial of the NACA!

Today, after 100 years, we celebrate the formation of the NACA of yester yore and its influence on the NASA of today.

The NACA not only influenced NASA, but our famed human spaceflight center here. Answer some trivia questions here with JSC flavor for your chance to be a VIP at the one-year International Space Station crew launch this month in the Mission Control Center. There is even an opportunity to get some extra credit by taking selfie in the Teague Auditorium (location determined by your right answer, of course). While in the Teague, don't forget to browse the star quilts influenced by astronaut Karen Nyberg's crafting in space.

Don't think you have the luck required to win the grand prize (which requires participation each day in the online scavenger hunt)? You could also win a fun JSC experience by participating just some of the time.

Find out on March 9 if you had the "right stuff" to win.
